The Danelectro Guitarlin Longhorn is a vintage electric guitar from 1958 famous for its radical double-cutaway shape and an extraordinary 31-fret neck designed to cover the range of both a guitar and a mandolin.
Key Features
- 31-Fret Fingerboard: The extended neck gives players extreme access to high notes well past standard octave limits.
- Longhorn Body Shape: The ultra-deep double cutaways provide total reach to the highest frets. The body uses a lightweight semi-hollow construction with a Masonite top and back.
- Lipstick Pickups: It features signature dual lipstick-style single-coil pickups that deliver bright, jangly, and distinctively retro tones. [
- Lightweight Design: Weighing only about 2 to 3 pounds, the instrument is very light, though the long neck can cause minor balance shifts when standing with a strap.
History and Rarity
Danelectro introduced the Guitarlin in 1958. Because its extended fretboard and mandolin-like range felt too radical for most players at the time, original production numbers were very low. According to Equipboard, these instruments remain iconic conversation starters and collectors’ items. Later Korean-made reissues and custom boutique tributes have occasionally brought the unique shape back into circulation
